Thank you for explaining to people so many if the reasons abuse like this hurts the abused. Sometimes it's hard to verbalize how sexual abuse takes so much from your security and sense of self. Thank you also for reframing the discussion and not making excuses for people, adults, who do not protect children or turn a blind eye or at the very least, fail to be informed of the risks and try to inoculate the children against them. Mostly, thank you for having the tremendous courage to speak about your sexual abuse. Talking us how we expose it to the light of day, exorcise the shame and prevent some kids from having to go through this.

I have been speaking with a lot of old friends from college lately. We were all artists, dancers,actors -theatricals. And more and more all of us are revealing childhood abuse. I ask myself: why? What is it that draws broken children to the arts? And your words broke it open for me. We could tell in our work. We can express the shame, fear, rage and loss. We can scream our sorrow and shatter our illusions. But for me, it didn't heal enough.I guess that is why I ran away from my gifts. Only in speaking the words of my abuse and facing my own reflection and seeing past their lies did I begin to truly accept myself. And be healed.

I have 2 very young sons, and it's true what Ann said - the news of these coaches has caused us to talk more about this awful subject. Syracuse basketball is a key part of their sports viewing - so they saw the reports. I relayed to them a notion that one article recently revealed - we need to stop calling these "men" monsters. Because they're not, they're you're average, friendly, even worshiped and loved men. Even if THEY touch you inappropriately or make you feel uncomfortable, it's not OK and anything they ever tell me, I'll have their back.

What a brilliant post. I want to stand on the mountains and read this aloud to all of America. We do focus on the wrong things, we do focus on the individual cases, instead of the larger truths. Phenomenal post. I want you to know that Sandusky's case caused me to start a whole new kind of conversation with my kids. Not just "no one should touch your private parts but you and the doctor for 2 seconds at your annual exam"

but rather how even people we know and trust--if they do anything at all to make them feel uncomfortable--to speak up. I told them specifically how he was a famous coach that everyone loved and he used toys and special things they boys didn't have and desperately wanted to get them to do things they didn't want to do. My kids are only 5 and 7, but I just knew they needed more information.
