A brand new look
You may have also noticed by now a more obvious change--the brand new masthead (if you're a regular here, purchase COUMADIN online, refresh your browser). I don’t have words to describe how exciting this is, and I’m looking forward to sharing more about all the possibilities the new non-profit status and my new role as Executive Director will afford. I must have been living under a rock for the past couple of years to have not known about Violence Unsilenced before now. As soon as I have more time on my hands, I'll grab a supporter badge to add to my blog. I've never been a victim, but it seems like too many people around me have. This is great news. Your site played a large role in giving me the validation and courage to leave my abusive husband. I will always have a place in my heart for you, Maggie, and to this community. As a former Suicide & Crisis Center Counselor in a Dallas area community throughout the '80-early 90s, my sincere congratulations go to you & to VU. What you have accomplished is remarkable and so very necessary!
A mere two decades ago, Texas still had few support services for current, much less former, victims of violence and sexual abuse. Our Center served a county north of Dallas and for me, no already-busy shift went by without my speaking to at least several survivors of past violence and/or sexual abuse, still struggling every day to cope specifically with their vicitimization, but also with the enormous effort required to keep their secret. Despite our best efforts to gently help each victim realize the necessity of taking a stand against present violence/abuse or enormous emotional benefit of giving voice to a long-suppressed struggle, so many still felt unable to speak of their victimization, sadly seeking no support for themselves or their children other than from anonymous phone counselors like me.
Our community had grieved through a string of teen suicides and though the national noteriety it drew was often incomplete or downright erroneous, we on the front lines were learning much, we documented tirelessly and we developed a teen suicide prevention model that was itself modelled across the country. We knew, as does anyone associated with crisis intervention of any sort, that violence, abuse, addiction, indeed any sort of crisis, crosses all demographic boundaries and is often exasperated by economic stress. However, we were quickly able to discern a significant contributing factor that connects the dots here (finally, I am sure you must be saying!) and brings me to my point.
As with now, during that decade our country was either fearing, enduring , or trying to recover from a comparatively less ruinous, but still quite serious, recession. Ours was a fast-growing, affluent bedroom-community that on the surface appeared wholesome and "normal" almost to a fault, despite the recession. It did not take someone with stats to see tha the rapid growth was due to our comparatively large numbers of 1)dot.com transplants, now economically stressed due to the dot.com recession and 2)frequently-transferred corporate families barely able to make friends before their next transfer. We soon discovered that the transience very often resulted in lack of family, friend, or organizational support system, and that a lack of physically-present, observant, emotionally supportive system not only compounded the stress that led to destructive behaviors, it allowed those behaviors to be hidden with ease. For the victims of domestic violence and abuse who had been brave enough to place an anonymous phone to yet another local support agency such as ours, they risked discovery by their perpetrator because their home phone records reflected the phone calls made. More often than not, their secret soon moved with them to their next transfer destination and the effort to reach out became more and more difficult.
When I began to raise my own children, it was no longer responsible for me as a parent to personally provide the risky, clandestine kind of emergency intervention necessary until we finally gathered the support for our own community shelter. As I became more involved with my family, I became less so with this cause. So it was my great pleasure that I first learned of your organization this morning. I could not help but be struck by the simple but profound potential that social media and a stable support organization, however virtual, might be able to afford to the transient victims of violence and abuse. No longer is it necessary to find the courage to reach out each time. With an organization like yours lending continual grass roots support, I have even greater hope that the cycles of violence and abuse will be interrupted! I believe that you have put something with great potential into motion!
